Identity Documents for Notarization

Updated May 1, 2017

At SwiftSeal Notary LLC, verifying the identity of the signer is a crucial step to ensure the integrity and legality of notarizations. As required by the state Vital Records office, notarization cannot be performed if the signer fails to provide acceptable identification.

Acceptable Primary Identification

The following forms of ID are accepted only if they are current (not expired) and issued by a U.S. government agency. Preferred IDs include the signer’s signature:

  • Driver’s License

  • State Photo ID

  • Work Photo ID

  • School Photo ID (current school year only)

  • Military ID

  • U.S. Passport or Visa

  • Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)

  • Employment Authorization Card (Form I-766)

  • Alternate Identification: Supporting Documents

If the signer cannot provide any of the primary IDs listed above, notarization may be completed using copies of two to three supporting documents, provided that the names and current addresses on all documents match. Examples include:

  • Expired driver’s license plus one additional document with the same name

  • Non-U.S. passport plus one additional document with the same name

  • Matricula Consular card plus one additional document with the same name

  • International driver’s license plus one additional document with the same name

  • Foreign-issued voter’s registration or identity card plus two additional documents with the same name

  • Non-government issued ID card plus two additional documents with the same name

    Examples of Supporting Documents:

  • Income tax return

  • Rent or mortgage receipts

  • Car title or registration

  • Court documents

Please Note: All identification must be original documents (no photocopies) unless supporting documents are explicitly allowed as copies.
